Eco-friendly materials to try this year
Sustainable interiors are about living with intention but not compromising on style. Fundamentally, sustainability starts with the materials you use to decorate or furnish your home. These 5 materials are stylish but more importantly benefit the environment.
Bamboo - an eco-friendly and sustainable material
Bamboo - this is a fast-growing renewable resource. It can be used on flooring, furniture and textiles.
Bamboo flooring has a natural look and is very durable. It is massively eco-friendly compared to laminate and contributes to sustainable living as it is renewable and with care, can last up to 25 years.
Bamboo furniture has a natural aesthetic. It can give a light and airy feel to a space and again is environmentally friendly. Even better if you can source vintage bamboo pieces from ebay or an antique shop!
Bamboo textiles like sheets, blankets or towels are soft and durable and have excellent moisture wicking properties.
Reclaimed wood - this is a great way to be sustainable. By using reclaimed wood it reduces demand for newly cut timber and is a great way to add character to your space. The Reclaimed Timber Company in the UK have everything from floorboards to church pews!
Recycled metal and glass - these can be used in countertops, lighting fixtures and decorative objects. Granite transformations are a good supplier of recycled glass countertops.
Organic and natural fabrics - these speak for themselves, look for organic cotton, linen, hemp and Tencel.
Low-VOC paint - Quite a few companies now sell low-VOC paint. A couple of my favourite brands are Lick, which produces eco-friendly paint and is a B corp company and Graphenstone, which produces a mineral based paint, completely made from environmentally friendly and natural ingredients.
Small steps make a big impact!
