The Biophilic bathroom trend:bringing nature into your space

An example of a biophilic bathroom

The biophilic bathroom trend has become very popular as people no longer just want a functional bathroom space but are looking to reconnect with nature and enhance their well-being.

A biophilic design aims to integrate nature into our indoor spaces. This is done by incorporating plants, natural light, organic materials and earthy colours to mimic the calming effects of the outdoors.

A fabulous outdoor shower

Here are 5 elements of a biophilic bathroom:

  1. Greenery and living plants - houseplants purify the air, improve humidity and create calm. Try Ferns, which thrive in humidity. Snake plants which filter toxins or Bamboo and Peace Lilies which look beautiful and add a spa like touch.

  2. Organic textures - these create a sense of warmth. Try Teak, cedar o bamboo for shelving and flooring. Stone for countertops and handmade tiles for an earthy charm.

  3. Maximise natural light - use skylights. Install frosted glass for privacy while letting the sunlight in. Warm LED lighting can also create a similar effect.

  4. Water features - try a freestanding tub or a rainfall showerhead for a spa-like experience.

  5. Nature inspired colours - Try soft greens symbolizing growth. Warm browns creating a grounding effect. Blues reminiscent of the ocean or greys and whites to create a minimalistic spa feel.

All of this can be done sustainably by choosing eco-friendly materials. Look for reclaimed wood, bath tubs and sinks. Water-saving fixtures and energy efficient lighting.

Small steps can make a big impact!
