Dopamine Decor…yes please!

Yellow walls in a living room. Yellow in any form can bring positivity to a space.

It’s January the 7th and it already feels like this month is going to go on for ever. The weather in the UK is cold and wet and sunshine is hard to come by! This has made me think about how much time we spend inside when it’s Winter and how it can affect our mood.

Obviously if you can get outside you should, but you can also get a dopamine boost at home by creating mood boosting spaces.

The dopamine decor trend came off the back of the dopamine dressing phrase which was coined by Dawnn Karen who believes that our choice of colour in clothes affects our mood. Wearing colours that make us feel good has a positive effect on our wellbeing.

The same applies to decorating. If you want to feel that dopamine hit, fill your space with all the colours and things that make your brain feel good. This can be painting a space, or just adding in colourful accessories like throws or cushions. Quirky objects or pictures that represent your personality are always a good idea.

If you want to paint a space start by thinking about how you want to feel in that space. If you want to feel calm you may want to choose a light blue for example. You can then look at complementary colours, the opposite colour on a colour wheel, and add in some brighter accessories or if you feel daring paint the woodwork, while still keeping it balanced. If you want to start small, just paint a piece of furniture or create a feature wall/fireplace.

The calming effect of blue

There are great ways to embrace this trend while being sustainable by

  • upcycling furniture with your chosen colour paint.

  • searching through charity shops for vintage/retro ornaments and pictures

  • re-purposing cushions or throws that you may have in other areas of your house

  • looking for objects made from recycled materials

Overall, choose what you love and you can’t go wrong. A space filled with your favourite things will never go out of date.
